We take it easy on the first day, adjust to the new timezone, relax and get settled.

    Our adventure begins!

    Accommodation: Hotel

  • It’s our first morning in Tokyo! We venture towards the tranquil Meiji Shrine, a sanctuary of peace and spirituality nestled within the bustling city. Dedicated to the spirits of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken, this revered Shinto shrine serves as a symbolic tribute to their legacy and the modernization of Japan during the Meiji Restoration in the late 19th century. Surrounded by lush forest, Meiji Shrine is a calm oasis in the city. The Kakuuntei teahouse within the shrine's grounds provides a moment of reflection and invites an introduction to the rich Japanese tea culture.

After our peaceful start, we plunge into the vibrant chaos of Takeshita Street in Harajuku. This area is known as Tokyo's center of youth culture and fashion, where tradition and innovation converge in a kaleidoscope of styles and trends. Harajuku has earned global recognition for its vibrant street fashion, pop culture influences, and creative expression. Takeshita Street offers a sensory overload with its colourful shops, trendy boutiques, and lively atmosphere. It's a place where the avant-garde meets tradition, and every street corner is a celebration of individuality and self-expression.

We then make our way to the iconic Shibuya crossing, pausing to marvel at the orchestrated movement of thousands of people crossing from all directions—a dance of urban life. This bustling intersection, immortalized in countless films and photographs, captures the vibrant pulse of Tokyo.

Around here, Rita has a restaurant suggestion that promises to blow your mind. An “only in Tokyo” kind of place.

Next, we venture into Shinjuku and jump on an elevator to capture a breathtaking view from the top of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. On a clear day, the majestic Mount Fuji makes an appearance on the horizon!

As the day winds down, we meander through Omoide Yokocho, a nostalgic alleyway brimming with the warm glow of lanterns and the inviting scent of yakitori grilling in the open air. This historic lane offers an intimate glimpse into Tokyo's past, with its narrow passageways lined with cozy diners and izakayas. We travel back in time, and get filled with a deep sense of having arrived in Japan.

As the evening deepens, we unwind and prepare ourselves for our journey to Japan's captivating countryside the next morning!

    Meals: Breakfast

    Accommodation: Hotel

  • We say goodbye to Tokyo, knowing we will be back here after 13 days of exploration!!

We board a train bound for the majestic Mount Fuji, embarking on a journey towards a truly extraordinary destination: the enchanting ecovillage known as Konohana Family. Konohana is a farming-based spiritual community at the foot of Mt. Fuji. It was started in 1994, and is now home to 90 people. When Rita lived at the Findhorn ecovillage in Scotland, she met one of the members of Konohana Family, who will welcome us to the community.

One of the goals at Namkha Trips is to promote conscious & sustainable life alternatives, and our 2 days at Konohana offer us just that!

We get acquainted with the community, do group reflection exercises, and Rita offers a small presentation about ecovillages. For 7 years she lived in communities around the world, was connected with the Global Ecovillage Network, taught and.consulted on sustainable living. This is a great time to ask questions!

In the evening, the lovely community greets us with a welcome concert that warms our hearts and brings a sense of togetherness.

We go to sleep feeling rocked by the heartfelt reception.

    Meals: Lunch, Dinner

    Accommodation: Ecovillage

  • What a feeling, to wake up in this beautiful community and join them for breakfast!

Konohana derives from the name of the Shinto goddess of Mt. Fuji, Konohana Sakuyahime no Mikoto. This morning we will marvel at the view of Mount Fuji, do some nature therapy, and make gratitude practices.

We venture through the community, visiting the rice fields, soy sauce and miso-making areas, their rice coffee production, and the expansive beehives.

We are welcomed into the kitchen, where we have the opportunity to learn the art of preparing some of Konohana's unique specialties, such as the lotus seeds, konjac root, and their unique way of cooking wild vegetables.

In the evening, we delight in an Ozen dinner - a traditional meal elegantly served in lacquered plates. This experience transports us through time, forging a deep connection with ancient generations who have preserved these cherished traditions through the ages.

Before bed, Rita leads a group sharing experience.

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Onzen Dinner

    Accommodation: Ecovillage

  • We bid a fond farewell to Konohana Family, leaving all the more comforted by our visit.

We hop on a train heading East, embarking on a journey to the sea side town of Kamakura - one of Japan's ancient capitals. Kamakura was the political center of Japan between 1185 and 1333, when the Kamakura shogunate ruled the country. This historical city is famous for its rich cultural heritage, a multitude of temples and shrines.

We have 2 days here. By now, we’ve soaked up the concept of Japanese simplicity, and we know that less is more. Instead of gulping down the country, we slow down and take our time to savour the experience. Kamakura is a great place to take it easy.

We visit the serene and picturesque Hokoku-ji Temple, with its beautiful bamboo grove. Originally founded during the early years of the Muromachi Period (1333-1573), Hokokuji was the family temple of the ruling Ashikaga Clan and was later also adopted as the family temple of the Uesugi Clan. We explore the main temple and the caves in the temple grounds, and calmly linger amidst the lush greenery, absorbing the peaceful energy of this enchanting place.

Kamakura sets the stage for a quintessential tea ceremony, inviting us to partake in the revered ritual of preparing and relishing matcha tea. This ceremonial tradition offers a moment of tranquility and respect, fostering a deeper connection with Japanese customs, and creating a serene interlude in our transformative journey.

We have free time, and can choose to unwind and recharge, embracing the leisurely atmosphere of Kamakura, or to venture out and discover more of the town's hidden gems.

    Meals: Breakfast, Tea ceremony

    Accommodation: Guesthouse

  • We start the day with the tranquility of a serene zazen meditation practice, allowing our minds to find stillness and harmony as we connect with our inner selves.

With our spirits calm and centered, we make our way to Kotoku-in Temple to behold the majestic Daibutsu, the Great Buddha of Kamakura. This towering bronze statue, standing impressively at 13.35 meters (43.8 feet) tall, stands as an enduring symbol of Japan's rich Buddhist legacy.

We pay a visit to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, a revered Shinto shrine from the 12th century, with its iconic vermillion-lacquered Romon Gate. Legend has it that the shrine was originally founded in Kamakura by Minamoto no Yoritomo, the first shogun of the Kamakura shogunate, to honor Hachiman, the god of war and divine protector of the samurai. Over the centuries, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu has served as a symbol of power, prestige, and spiritual devotion, attracting pilgrims and worshippers seeking blessings for victory and protection.

We then go to Nohbutai Cafe Kagura and delight in the art of Noh theatre. We find ourselves spellbound by the intricate movements, the haunting melodies, and profound storytelling that characterize this traditional Japanese performing art. We delve into a realm where ancient traditions and artistic mastery converge, offering a truly immersive experience that transcends time and culture.

We wander along the shores of Shichirigahama beach, and let the essence of the first six days seep into our beings. Under the open sky, we may be graced with breathtaking views of Mount Fuji to the West, providing a fittingly awe-inspiring backdrop to our reflective journey.

    Meals: —

    Accommodation: Guesthouse

  • It’s time to head North! We start our journey towards Tohoku! Ater a few train changes, we finally board the sleek shinkansen (bullet train) bound for Yamagata prefecture.

The train takes us to Yamadera, the charming village with a temple nestled atop a mountain. Before we ascend to the temple, we visit one of the cozy soba houses, renowned for their handmade soba noodles - a culinary delight not to be missed in this prefecture.

We follow the path to the awe-inspiring Risshaku-ji temple. This sacred site was founded in 860 AD by the famed priest Ennin. Monks carried a sacred flame from Enryaku-ji temple near Kyoto. They believed that the rock faces of Yamadera marked the boundaries between this world and the next. Legend has it that this flame continues to burn to this day. The temple complex comprises several halls and pagodas nestled along a lush mountainside, with tori gates here and there, and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The 1,015 stone steps leading to the main hall provide a symbolic journey towards enlightenment and inner peace.

Having soaked in the timeless beauty of Yamadera, we journey to the vibrant city of Sendai. The urban landscape of Sendai is a perfect contrast to the serene temple, offering a blend of modernity and tradition.

Our accommodation for the night promises a unique experience as we check into a capsule hotel, immersing ourselves in the futuristic and efficient sleeping pods that epitomize modern Japanese innovation.

What a day! Waking up in the ancient capital, exploring a centuries-old temple, and culminating in a futuristic capsule hotel stay. The journey unfolds like a tapestry of past and present, offering a unique perspective on the diverse facets of Japan.

    Meals: —

    Accommodation: Capsule Hotel

  • We leave Sendai on the shinkansen to Hiraizumi, a town often referred to as the "Kyoto of Tohoku".

We explore Motsuji temple, with its well curated gardens and intricate architecture. The gardens of Japan provide a fascinating window into the wider spiritual and intellectual principles that underpin their creation. This historical treasure from the 9th century provides a window into Japan's profound religious customs and the craftsmanship of ancient times. We travel back in time here.

We continue to Chuson-ji, a renowned Buddhist temple complex which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was established in the 9th century, and is famous for its Konjiki-do, a breathtaking golden hall adorned with intricate gold leaf design - a true marvel of craftsmanship and devotion. We appreciate such dedication and beauty, and we open our hearts in the golden room.

As we explore the sacred grounds of the ancient temples, we have a sense of serenity and reverence, and feel touched by the profound cultural heritage and spiritual dedication of Hiraizumi. The profound ambiance creates a transcendent experience.

    Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

    Accommodation: Ryokan

  • We wake up in the serene embrace of Hiraizumi. The day is dedicated to immersing ourselves in the beauty of nature.

After breakfast, we head towards the Geibikei Gorge, where we embark on a serene boat ride along the Satetsu river. Our boat is a traditional flat-bottomed cedar boat, historically used for horse transportation. The boats in Geibikei are navigated by men and women who sing the traditional songs of Geibi Oiwake. Their melodic voices resonate through the gorge, creating a soothing and memorable journey for us.

We explore nature therapy exercises. Nature envelops us, enhancing and deepening our experience as we immerse ourselves in the tranquil surroundings. The rustling of leaves, the gentle flow of the river, the carps (koi) swimming next to the boat, the Autumn colours, the sun light through the trees, and the harmonious songs of birds create a symphony of sensory delight, connecting us with the essence of the natural world and fostering a profound sense of peace and reflection within our souls.

We return to Hiraizumi, where we have free time for reflection, rest, and integration. There are 2 optional hikes in more beautiful nature, for those who wish to explore further.

    Meals: Breakfast

    Accommodation: Ryokan

  • We leave Hiraizumi with our energy replenished and our souls touched. We board a northbound train to Hirosaki, and reach the northernmost point of our trip.

We explore the exquisite Fujita Memorial Gardens, created in 1919 by Fujita Kenichi - a local business magnate. They were designed to reflect a harmonious blend of Japanese and Western landscaping techniques. We take in tae esthetically pleasing environment and watch its effect on us.

Hirosaki is famous for coffee, apple pie, and all things apple-based. We indulge in these specialties, treating our senses to a symphony of flavours.

Our journey continues with a visit to the iconic Hirosaki Castle and its surrounding park. The castle, originally constructed in 1611 by the Tsugaru clan, stands as a testament to Japan's rich history and architectural heritage. From the park, we are treated to stunning views of Mount Iwaki, a majestic volcanic peak that adds a picturesque backdrop to the serene beauty of the castle grounds.

We unwind and have an early night, to get ready to leave at daybreak.

    Meals: Breakfast

    Accommodation: Hotel

  • At dawn we leave the beautiful city of Hirosaki behind, and head to Tazawa lake. From there we find our way to Nyuto onsen. This is a day to pamper ourselves.

Here, the Japanese tradition of bathing in onsens (natural hot springs) invites us to experience not just relaxation for the body, but also a profound healing experience for the mind and soul. The therapeutic properties of these mineral-rich hot springs have been cherished for centuries, known to soothe weary limbs, invigorate the spirit, and restore balance to both body and mind. As we immerse ourselves in the rejuvenating waters, the cares of the world melt away, leaving us refreshed, renewed, and embraced by the healing power of nature's soothing touch.

As dinner approaches, we savour a thoughtfully crafted meal that embodies Japanese artistry and attention to detail. We will probably remember this meal for a long time.

The baths are available all through the night, inviting those seeking a post-dinner soak to unwind and relax in the tranquil waters.

    Meals: Dinner

    Accommodation: Onsen

  • We watch the sunrise in serene Nyuto Onsen, where we enjoy the hot spring baths nestled within the lush foliage of Akita Prefecture. We have a heavenly breakfast that prepares us for the trip ahead.

Feeling healed and rejuvenated by the onsen water, we carry on to Tazawa lake. This mystical lake is the deepest one in Japan. Its crystal-clear waters and the legend of the beautiful maiden Tatsuko invite us to ponder the depth of history and nature's untouched beauty.

We take a short ride to Kakunodate, and immerse ourselves in pure samurai spirit. This historic town, established in 1620 by Ashina Yoshikatsu - the leader of the Satake clan - offers an authentic glimpse into the lives and times of these legendary warriors.

Strolling through Kakunodate, we take in its unique architecture, where each samurai residence and winding alley whispers tales from the past. Our leisurely walk becomes a journey through time, as we observe the details in the woodwork, the elegant gardens, and the quietly imposing gates that once protected the samurai who resided within. This architectural exploration enriches our understanding of the samurai’s daily life and their enduring influence on Japanese culture.

After a day rich in discovery, we embrace a peaceful rest, cocooning ourselves in tranquility as we rejuvenate and look forward to the wonders that await us the next day in samurai land.

    Meals: Breakfast

    Accommodation: Ryokan

  • We rise inspired by the most legendary warriors in history. It's an honour to tread upon the sacred grounds of these legendary figures.

This day we delve deep into samurai culture. The town's well-preserved buke yashiki district, with its authentic samurai residences, beckons us to explore its timeless allure.

Walking through the district, we visit two ancient samurai houses, and marvel at the distinctly Japanese aesthetic that has been meticulously preserved. In one of these storied homes, we encounter direct descendants of samurai warriors - a living bridge to the past.

Kakunodate’s main avenue, lined with ancestral buildings, takes us further into a unique world where every corner breathes history and tradition.

We explore the samurai’s Bushido, or "the way of the warrior" - a unique code of ethical conduct that guided the samurai class of Japan. It includes the values of Righteousness, Courage, Benevolence, Respect, Honesty, Honour, Loyalty, and Self-Control. While samurais were renowned warriors, their ethical code, Bushido, taught them to balance their martial abilities with a deep sense of humanity and a responsibility to care for those weaker than themselves. This principle encouraged samurais to use their strength and influence not just for personal or feudal gain, but to make a positive impact on their community and society at large, reflecting a broader and more holistic understanding of strength that includes compassion and care for others.

Reflecting on samurai ethics, we venture into a local miso factory, where the traditional methods of miso making are still cherished. This visit offers us not only a taste of authentic Japanese cuisine but also an insight into the rich culinary traditions that have nourished the samurai and the people of Japan for centuries.

We walk along the river and have time for nature therapy. Our journey is getting closer to the end, and we take the time to reflect and integrate the experiences.

We go to sleep inspired by the values of samurai's bushido, and dream of ways in which we can awaken the ethical warrior in ourselves.

    Meals: —

    Accommodation: Ryokan

  • Departing at dawn, we embark on a soul-stirring journey towards the sacred mountains of Dewasanzan, a revered trinity nestled in the heart of Yamagata Prefecture.

In the realm of Shugendō beliefs, each mountain within the Dewasanzan holds profound symbolism. Haguro-san embodies the essence of birth, Gassan represents the cycle of death, and Yudono-san stands as the gateway to rebirth. Together, these sacred summits weave a tapestry of life's transformative journey, ushering pilgrims through the spiritual metamorphoses of their pilgrimage to Dewa Sanzan.

Our ascent of Haguro-san is marked by 2,446 stone steps that wind through towering cedars and past serene altars, climbing to an elevation of 419 meters. This path is much more than a physical challenge, it's rather a spiritual voyage. We cross paths with pilgrims completing their sacred quest, and the Yamabushi - mountain priests, with their shell conches and distinctive white robes, straw sandals, and hats.

On our way up, we encounter a very special tree called Jiji-sugi, or Grandpa Cedar Tree. This is an ancient cedar tree believed to be over 1,000 years old. Its trunk has a circumference of 10.5m at the base, and he is both the biggest and tallest cedar on Mt. Haguro. We take our time to connect.

Our journey up is unforgettable. At the summit, the majesty of Haguro-san's temples awaits, inviting us into a realm of peace and reverence.

As evening descends, we are welcomed into a temple lodging near the top of Haguro-san. Here, we indulge in the transcendent flavours of shōjin ryōri, the Zen Buddhist cuisine that encapsulates purity and simplicity. Dinner is a meditative feast, featuring mountain vegetables and mushrooms gathered by monks, a meal that elevates dining to a divine experience.

In this hallowed setting, as we rest for the night, we find ourselves enveloped in a blanket of tranquility and reflection, a fitting close to a day of spiritual journeying.

    Meals: Shojin Ryori Dinner

  • Awakening with the first light of day at the temple nestled near Haguro-san, we are greeted by a delicious breakfast that rejuvenates our spirits. With our energies replenished, we ascend once again to the summit of Haguro-san for a ceremony held in the main temple. We make offerings and gather blessings for our life journey onwards.

As we descend the sacred mountain, each step serves as a poignant reflection on our pilgrimage experience, inviting us to retrace the footprints of our journey and cherish the memories woven throughout our travels. With hearts full of gratitude and reverence, we make our way to Tsuruoka, and get ready to embark on the final leg of our return journey to Tokyo.

Boarding our last shinkansen, we bid farewell to the slow pace of our days in Tohoku. The train quickly travels South, and we start transitioning back to the dynamic pulse of Tokyo.
